When it comes to extension offers, there is one question all travel nurses must ask themselves. Just like the rock band The Clash once asked, “Should I stay or should I go?”
Reasons to stay
It’s easy
With extensions, it’s easy. There are no orientations or onboardings to get through, no housing or assignment search, and no awkward first day. Not to mention, you already know the location of equipment, your coworkers, and the best places to eat in town.
It gives you more time
Maybe you’re not ready to leave behind the people you’ve met. Maybe you need more time to hike your favorite trail or surf that final wave. Or maybe you just need the time to decide where you want to go next. Whatever the reason, extensions can give you the time you need.
It’s flexible
With the ability to negotiate, extensions can be more flexible than your original contract. Working closely with your account manager, you can have a say in the number of weeks you stay on with the facility, a raise in pay, and many other potential perks.
Reasons to go
It’s not the right fit
Maybe Texas is too hot. Maybe the town is too small. Or maybe something just feels off. No matter the reason, if the assignment isn’t the right fit for you, then there is no reason to stay. Luckily, as a travel nurse, you don’t have to.
It won’t get better
According to Becker’s Hospital Review, problem-solving is done best “one-on-one.” Nurses should actively communicate with their recruiter and facility to address any issues and concerns. However, if solutions aren’t offered, and requests can’t be met, it’s time to look for other assignments.
It’s time to move on
One major benefit of being a travel nurse is the travel. If you’re ready for a change of scenery, to tackle new challenges, and meet new people, then it’s time to move on.
No matter your reasons, extensions should benefit you. If they don’t, then it’s time to say goodbye. Whether you’re negotiating your contract or looking for a new one, Ethos can help.
