Many people assume the Midwest is just flat, boring farmland. However, this list proves that assumption wrong. From race cars to rockstars, many exciting attractions are found here. Read on to find out why your next assignment should be in the Midwest.
Indianapolis 500 – Indianapolis, Indiana
Indiana is home to the largest sports venue in the world – the Indy 500. While here on assignment, buy a ticket to watch a race, take any one of their multiple tours offered, or drive a real NTT IndyCar Series Car in their Indy Racing Experience Driving Program. Whether you’re a racecar fan or not, you’re sure to have a great time on this track.
Mall of America – Bloomington, Minnesota
Mall of America – the largest shopping mall in the United States – is filled with entertaining attractions. Relive your childhood at the Nickelodeon Universe, explore an entire aquarium inside Sea Life, fly over America’s landmarks with FlyOver America, or test your breakout skills in their Escape Room. However you spend your 13 weeks in Minnesota, Mall of America has you covered.
Willis Tower Skydeck – Chicago, Illinois
While in Illinois on assignment, you have to step out onto The Ledge. Located in the Willis Tower Skydeck, The Ledge is a glass box that juts out 4.3 feet away from the building. Get a breathtaking unobstructed view spanning four states while 1,353 feet up in the sky. It’s an experience you won’t find anywhere else.
Villisca Axe Murder House – Villisca, Iowa
If you’re a true crime fan, then the Villisca Axe Murder House is a must-visit while on assignment in Iowa. Paranormal investigators and psychics alike have confirmed the presence of ghosts. Take a daylight tour, or if you’re brave enough, stay overnight. Either way, you’re sure to have a supernatural experience.
The Gateway Arch – Saint Louis, Missouri
The iconic Gateway Arch is the number one attraction in Missouri. So obviously, it’s a must-see while on assignment here. Take a tram ride 63 stories up this monument for endless views to the east and west. Or step outside for a new perspective. Take a 19th-century paddle-wheel riverboat cruise to see the arch against the city skyline. Day or night, this is a sight you cannot miss.
Evel Knievel Museum – Topeka, Kansas
Lions and tigers and Evel Knievel, oh my! While on assignment in Kansas, take a trip to the Evel Knievel Museum. Here you can view his patriotic (and extremely damaged) helmets, learn about his injuries, read his fan mail, and take a whack at some of his famous jumps yourself. Whether you succeed or not, you’re sure to have a good time.
Carhenge – Alliance, Nebraska
Imagine Stonehenge, but replace the stones with 38 gray spray-painted cars. That is Nebraska’s Carhenge. With a 96-foot diameter, this sculpture is as proportional as possible to England’s Stonehenge. Ranked in the top 10 attractions by TripAdvisor in 2020, Carhenge is a must-see while you’re on assignment in Nebraska.
Fargo Air Museum – Fargo, North Dakota
This museum is home to a Wright Brother’s flyer and an MQ-1 Predator aircraft. However, what sets this museum apart is its flight simulators. Fargo provides 30 different aircraft for you to pilot through real-time weather and air traffic. Fly anywhere in the world while never leaving North Dakota.
Mount Rushmore – Keystone, South Dakota
While in South Dakota, you have to visit one of America’s most beloved landmarks. Of course, you’ll view the physical representation of democracy and read up on the featured president’s history. However, you can also visit the sculptors’ studio, hike the presidential trail, and end the day with Thomas Jefferson ice cream. It could be a great way to spend a day off in South Dakota.
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame – Cleveland, Ohio
You might not expect to find a museum of rock and roll in Cleveland, Ohio, but you can expect to be blown away by it. Explore the evolution of music starting on level 0 and ending with level 5, Legends of Rock. Stop on level 2 to play real instruments and make your own music in The Garage. From Pink Floyd to JAY-Z, this museum is worth visiting while on assignment.
Regardless of its “boring” reputation, these states have plenty of attractions to keep you entertained. 13 weeks on assignment in any one of these Midwestern states will feel like no time at all.
